May 2009 Newsletter

Tonight is the June meeting so I thought I should start and finish the May meeting notes. The meeting was May 18 at Helen's and only five of us gathered to share, eat and enjoy each others company. Those attending included Carol, Dawn, Helen, Randi and Linda. Where is everyone else??
Randi reported on the Nevada Quilt Guild show in Fallon, Nevada Desert in Bloom. The event next year will be at the Fallon Convention Center from May 17-22. Randi also shared tips from quilt judges and will make copies for members when we see her next.
Membership in the Nevada Quilt Guild is $25 for non chartered chapter members and $20 for affiliated chapter members.
The Sierra to Sage Shop Hop will be September 24-27 with 14 participating quilt stores. Check out their website www.sierrra2sageshophop.com
Randi also shared a picture of the pillow shams her mother, Sylvia, made to match the quilts Randi made for her parents. Talent runs in the family, don't you agree?

It is now the morning of the July meeting and I am still trying to finish minutes from May. It has been a busy summer, what more can I say?

At the May meeting, Randi gave everyone a Mother's Day ornament, Courtship Bauble. These beautiful patchwork baubles are used in traditional coutship games of the New Year's festival by the Laosong villagers of Thailand. An eligible young woman twirls the bauble on the ind of her finger and lets it fly off into a crowd of young men. The lucky man who catches her bauble may ask her parents for permission to "court" their caugher, and perhaps win her heart. Thanks Randi, we think they are beautiful!

The quilt Randi was working on for her nephew Mike is ready to take on her trip to the east coast in June. Isn't this a beauty? We'll miss you at the meeting but you will have a great time with your grandkids. Randi also brought a back issue of Quilting Arts magazine to shor Rita and fish printing . Helen talked about using three fixatives used to color quilts with pencils, crayons, and brush on paint to make permanent art quilts.

Dawn shared the self-bound, tied quilt donated to the silent auction that she purchased at the Mom's on the Run. Thanks to Dave for being the top bidder on our quilt donation. You are the best!

Carol in on her red jag and showed us two quilts. One is a jacket that she knows her cousin Dianne would want if she saw it....I guess we know what it was kept a secret. Wear it in good health, Carol.

Randi will bring websites for "cool quilting blogs" and Quilt Mania magazines published in Europe that give an interesting global view of quilters around the globe.

We got a great update from Carol on her daughter, Trisha. She is currently working on a project, has a rag quilt in the works and found a quilt she started years ago for her son. Now she too has UFOs! Trisha is doing a great job caring for Mike's little girls and they are doing well.

Helen is working on Snake River Log Cabin quilt by Judy Martin. Created from 1 and 1/2" strips, there are over 5,000 pieces in this quilt! She is cutting strips with a special ruler which reduces cutting time from 20 minutes to 3 and 1/2 minutes. Wow!

We missed everyone who was not with us at the May meeting and since tonight is the July meeting, we hope to see you at Helen's. Special hello to Kathy. We heard you had a great visit with Dawn and will share photos.
Happy Summering!
Linda
